Find Out More DEPARTMENT OF ART LECTURE SERIES LING-LIN KU – (Bliss Hall 4047) Tuesday, February 20, 1pm Ling-lin Ku’s studio is a playground and an alchemy of the world where she plays in-between the digital data and tangible materials through digital fabrication. She uses most local references including food, body parts, and products, yet through proximity, scale, texture, display structures, and material, Ling-lin upends our relationship to the known. The work slip in and out of categorization, creating a new way in which we come to understand objecthood. Ling-lin has been exhibited her work in cities ranging from Salzburg (Austria), Barcelona (Spain), Paris (France), to New York City, Los Angeles, Richmond, Austin, Houston and Pittsburgh, and selected into residencies including International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn, Summer Academy in at Salzburg, Austria, Haystack Open Studio Residency, L’AiR Atelier 11, Paris, France, and 18th Street Art Center at Los Angeles, CA. Ling-lin is the recipient of Seebacher Prize in Fine Arts awarded by American Austrian Foundation and the winner of Umlauf Extended Prize and Houston Artadia Fellow. She is awarded the Honorable Mention of Innovative Award by International Sculpture Center. Ling-lin received her MFA from University of Texas at Austin in 2019 and BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016. In 2022 she joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University where she is an assistant professor at the school of art. He teaches various courses in 3D computer animation and creative coding. His work as an artist and researcher explores the object, the environment, and the abstract. (27820240 from phones and video systems) IAN NAGOSKI– (McDonough Museum of Art, Lecture Hall) Wednesday, March 27, 5:30pm Ian Nagoski is a music researcher and record producer in Baltimore, Maryland. For more than a decade, he has produced dozens of reissues of early 20th century recordings in languages other than English for labels including Dust-to-Digital, Tompkins Square, his own Canary Records, and others. His enthusiastic talks have been hosted at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens Greece, the University of Chicago, the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa Oklahoma, and New York University, and he has presented his work in installation at the Museum fur Naturkunde in Berlin Germany, the Wellcome Center in London England, and the Peale Center in Baltimore Maryland. A fragment of his work is included on the MoonkArk, the first object to be permanently installed on the moon, in 2020. His work is so rare and important that it should almost be treated as a ritual object, a pathway to the past and a voice for ghosts of a forgotten part of American musical history.” – Nate Wooley, SoundAmerican …as essential to an understanding of American music as anything else.” – Amanda Petrusich, Pitchfork JOHANNES DeYOUNG– (McDonough Museum of Art, Lecture Hall) Monday, April 17, 5:30pm Johannes DeYoung is an internationally recognized artist and filmmaker who works at the intersection of computational and material processes. His moving-image works have been exhibited internationally at venues such as: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante, Alicante, Spain; Festival ECRÃ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, Taiwan; B3 Biennale of the Moving Image, Frankfurt en Main, Germany; Hesse Flatow (Crush Curatorial), Jeff Bailey Gallery, Robert Miller Gallery, Interstate Projects, Eyebeam, and MoMA PS1 Print Studio, New York, NY; as well as numerous festival screenings in countries such as Australia, Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Turkey, and Vietnam. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The New York Post, The Huffington Post, and Dossier Journal. DeYoung co-founded the periodic web journal Lookie-Lookie. He served on the New Foundations Board of Study for time-based media at Purchase College, State University of New York; the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts Contemporary Art Council; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, as Digital Literacy Consultant. DeYoung is appointed Assistant Professor of Electronic and Time-Based Media at Carnegie Mellon University. He previously taught at Yale University School of Art (2008—2018), where he was appointed Senior Critic and Director of the Center for Collaborative Arts and Media, and at the Yale School of Drama, where he was appointed Lecturer in Design. At Yale, he also served as Principal Investigator for the Blended Reality program in immersive media research. He received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006. KRISTIN LUCAS – (virtual) – Wednesday, April 3, 4pm Kristin Lucas intervenes in systems and paradigms to experiment with new ways of being in a technologized world. Her circuitous works resonate with humor and philosophical ponderings. Lucas has been featured in Art in America, Artforum, Engadget, and Hyperallergic, and she is the recent recipient of an Engadget Alternate Realities Grant and a SciArt Institute The Bridge Collaborative Residency. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally at venues including Artists Space, FACT Liverpool, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Harvestworks, Haus der Kunst, HeK Basel, ICA Philadelphia, Nam June Paik Art Center, Pioneer Works, OK Center for Contemporary Art, MoMA, New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and ZKM; and at festivals including BAM Teknopolis, Cinekid, EarthxFilm, Impakt, ISEA, Okeechobee Music & Arts, Print Screen, TIFF, Transmediale, World Wide Video, and WSJ Future of Everything. And/Or Gallery and Postmasters represent her work, and her videos are distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix.
